taking care of your laptop
here are some things to watch out for when using your laptop:
-
read the documentation that comes with your laptop. they usually come with care tips from the manufacturers themselves.
- when travelling, don’t check it in. i’ve seen bag handlers throw luggages around.
- when using the laptop, put it on a flat surface. cooling intakes are usually found at the bottom of the laptop. putting it on top of a towel or bed will block the cooling intakes and make your latop hotter.
- use the carrying case. it may not be fashionable or hip but its there for a purpose — to protect the laptop. use it.
- discharge the batteries. i have found that the batteries — lithium-ion (li-on), nickel-metal hydride (nimh) or nickel-cadmium (ni-cad) — needs to be discharged almost completely at least once a month to lengthen their lives. it doesn’t do much good to keep it plugged in so once in a while run them down until the battery indicator reaches 3%.
- when the laptop suffers a hard knock or fall don’t panic. usually you can still boot the operating system but when you get the chance perform a quick disk diagnostic.
