taking care of your laptop

here are some things to watch out for when using your laptop:

  1. read the documentation that comes with your laptop. they usually come with care tips from the manufacturers themselves.

  2. when travelling, don’t check it in. i’ve seen bag handlers throw luggages around.
  3. when using the laptop, put it on a flat surface. cooling intakes are usually found at the bottom of the laptop. putting it on top of a towel or bed will block the cooling intakes and make your latop hotter.
  4. use the carrying case. it may not be fashionable or hip but its there for a purpose — to protect the laptop. use it.
  5. discharge the batteries. i have found that the batteries — lithium-ion (li-on), nickel-metal hydride (nimh) or nickel-cadmium (ni-cad) — needs to be discharged almost completely at least once a month to lengthen their lives. it doesn’t do much good to keep it plugged in so once in a while run them down until the battery indicator reaches 3%.
  6. when the laptop suffers a hard knock or fall don’t panic. usually you can still boot the operating system but when you get the chance perform a quick disk diagnostic.
