wordpress in a yahoo subdomain
i have been using yahoo! webhosting for a couple of months now and as soon as wordpress was available i immediately installed it. my plan was to put the blog in a subdomain and that was easy to do with yahoo’s tools: create a subdirectory, create a subdomain that points to that subdirectory. so when i go to the main blog page i see:

the problem i had was when i was navigating from within the blog. the subdomain wasn’t showing up in the links and instead it was showing the subdirectory’s address.
![]()
ugh. and i’m nitpicky about these things. so i found a solution and everything is shown here.
the only requirements are that you have a yahoo! web hosting account and that you want to put a wordpress blog in one of the subdirectories (not the root or main directory). if you don’t have a yahoo! web hosting account then is article may not be applicable to your situation. the package i got is a smallbiz web hosting starter.
there are a few clarifications/assumptions that i am making:
- that you already know how to activate wordpress in your yahoo! web hosting package
- this is not really a guide on how to install wordpress in a yahoo! web hosting package
- that you already know how to move around in your yahoo! web hosting control panels
first, in your web site, create a subdirectory where you will put your blog. it should be only one level down from your main directory. you can do this either via ftp or via the filemanager in the yahoo control panel. in my site i chose “blog”.

next, go to the “manage domains” control panel to add a subdomain to your domain. i set it up so that the “blog” subdomain points to the “blog” subdirectory i just created.

after adding the subdomain you can now install (or, as yahoo! would put it, “activate”) wordpress. as of this writing, yahoo is using version 2.0. i have not confirmed if they are using version 2.0.1 but i’m sure they’ll be upgrading in the near future.

yahoo! has made it a breeze to install a wordpress blog and the instructions are easy to follow. so after clicking on that “activate wordpress” button, just take note of a couple of important things. first, uncheck the “make my blog my home page” since we are installing the blog in a subdirectory and not in the home directory. next, select the “custom” activation path instead of the “standard” activation path. this way we can specify which directory we want to install the blog in.

clicking “next” will bring you to a screen where you choose what subdirectory you want to put your blog in.

choose “install in an existing directory” and then click on “browse”. for security reasons (mine) i have edited out the names of the other subdirectories in my site from the browse pane. choose the subdirectory where your chosen subdomain is pointing to. in my case its the subdirectory named “blog”. just follow the rest of the instructions and you’re done with activating a copy of wordpress in your yahoo! web hosting package.
next is to go to the newly installed wordpress blog and log in by using the username and password you chose when you activated/installed a wordpress blog. you will then be taken to the dashboard. go to the “options” page and somewhere there you will find
these are the two options you will change. please be reminded that this is one of my wordpress installations so your addresses may be different from mine.
i changed those two options to:
please note that both addresses are the address of the subdomain that i created. also, once you click on the “blog address (uri)” field a warning dialog box will appear.
please take time to read it. click on “ok” and then you can edit the “blog address” field.
one thing i found weird was when i tried selecting the contents of the field, it doesn’t. well, at least, it doesn’t show what i’ve selected. i don’t know if its a quirk of firefox or not. but going through the motions of clicking on the field, pressing ctrl+a (select all) and typing in the same address as the first field leads me to the conclusion that it does select the contents of the field but wordpress just doesn’t show it.
please take note that there is no ending slash at each of the addresses.
click on “update options” and you’re done.
i think that setting up the blog subdomain at the start, before posting anything is the best way to go. but if you’re like me, who installed wordpress and started blogging right away without changing the options first, then the best way to proceed without breaking the permalinks is to use the same subdomain name as the name of the subdirectory where you installed your wordpress blog.
i hope this helps someone.
