speedfan

i discovered this little utility that monitors my desktop computer. it polls the speed of the fans, the temperatures of the cpu, motherboard and hard disks (those that have temp sensors built in). it optionally controls the speed of the fans to keep things quiet.

for my purposes i just leave the speed of the fans alone because it gets pretty hot where my computer is and i have a unusual wiring for my fans that may prevent me from controlling their speed via software. i just want to know the internal temps of the motherboard, cpu and one of the hard disks and for the software to alert me when my set upper thresholds get reached. here’s a screenshot of the temps in my system. there are more in the speedfan web site.

i was fairly surprised when it detected the onboard sensors considering i have an old motherboard (asus a7a266-e). before using this program, i’d recommend going through the documentation in the speedfan website first and check if you’re motherboard is supported. oh yeah, before i forget, the software is free but a donation is very much welcome.
