power problems

i woke up paranoid this morning and decided to open up my computer case and check the power supply connections. with the power off i performed an un-plug-and-plug with all the psu connectors starting from the 20-pin motherboard plug going to the molex plugs for the fans and drives.

the voltages did go up a bit (by 0.1v to 0.19v) according to the sensors built into the motherboard but they are known to be inaccurate. so out comes my multimeter to get actual readings directly from the psu. if you want to know how to do this driver heaven has a pretty good guide on how to do it.

speedfan says the +12v rail is giving out 11.80v; the multimeter says its 11.95v. speedfan says the +5v rail is giving out 4.87v; the multimeter says its 4.93v. for reference i’m using a sanwa cd800 digital multimeter with a dc voltage accuracy of 0.7%.

the voltages are still low for my tastes but i can relax a bit. i still would want to do some desktop spring cleaning within the next two weeks which means i’ll completely disassemble my computer, clean it up with a brush and compressed air and assemble everything again. i have a suspicion that the plugs are not getting a proper contact fit.

yes, i’m still thinking of getting another power supply when i get the extra cash.
