vista ready?

i wanted to find out if my computer is ready for vista. microsoft has this utility that you can download called the windows vista upgrade advisor to check if my computer can run their new operating system. warning: the utility does not work on windows 98, 2000, xp pro x64 editions.

so i downloaded the thing (6.4mb) and tried to install it. the program asked for two more things to download before i can install and run it — msxml6 (1.45mb) and microsoft .net framework 2.0 (22.4mb). all this just to check if my computer can run vista. sigh.

i finally got it to run.

vista upgrade advisor

clicking on the start scan will kicked off its analysis of my system. the green progress bar was pretty too. ;)

vua scanning system

and after a few minutes, the results are:

business vista

so i can run vista. well, the business edition at least. but it does advise me to get a dvd drive or order windows vista cds instead of the dvd. apparently my system memory (768 meg) as well as my graphics adapter (ati radeon 9550, 128mb) is suffient to run vista and aero.

but if i wanted to run the ultimate edition, i would need:

vista ultimate needs

so besides the cost of the upgrade to vista, i would also have to dish out money for a dvd r/w drive and a tv tuner. aawww. i can see it now, a few months after upgrading to vista, i’ll have to add more memory and start replacing my current hard disks with bigger ones.

i think i’ll hold off upgrading until ms kills off support for xp pro. then i’ll upgrade to ubuntu

The green progress bar you like may very well prove to be an accessibility problem for many. Even I, with near to perfect sight and a good screen, find it difficult to differ the color contrasts on that progress bar…

And you should seriously consider migrating to Ubuntu or any other free software platform. Debian might also be an option.

not to worry. i am actually in the process of migrating to either kubuntu, ubuntu or pcbsd (in that order). i will have to keep xp pro as a second or third option because my clients use it. i just want to make sure that there will be very little disruption with work when the transition comes.
