office suites

things just got a little more interesting in the office applications circle. there’s microsoft office, then the free openoffice suite and then there’s lotus symphony.

ibm resurrected the symphony line with three applications — a word processor, a presentation program and a spreadsheet. according to ibm, these three are based on openoffice. judging by the screenshots on the lotus site, the interface is not as polished as ms office but it appears that it will get the same job done and its free.

IBM today (18 sept 2007) announced IBM Lotus Symphony, a suite of free software tools for creating and sharing documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

Beginning today at www.ibm.com/software/lotus/symphony, business, academic, governmental and consumer users alike can download this enterprise-grade office software, which is the same tool inside some of IBM’s most popular collaboration products, such as the recently released Lotus Notes 8.

lotus symphony is available for download for free, well you need to register first. as of this writing the suite is still in beta so be aware of this fact before downloading.
