no. i don’t feel compelled to upgrade just yet. i’m a paranoid kind of guy when it comes to these things. would like know if there are major issues that would crop up that i can live with when people upgrade to 2.3.

but i am reading up on the topic and tags seems like a pretty good idea; i especially like the phrase “faster javascript” and “core update notification”. i have to read the final notes when they come out.

i’ve also been reading up on just modifying my current theme to add wp 2.3 tag support.

in the meantime, i’ll just sit back and see what transpires in the wp support forums.

king text 0.69 — i really liked this widget but unfortunately it was throwing warnings all over the place

wp-cache — version 2.1.1 gives me an error on its configuration page. i tried version 2.0.17 and it seemed to work — no errors and stuff — but it seems that its not caching any pages.

i think i’ll have to redo my theme. its currently based on kubrick 1.5 and i’m not sure if it plays nice with wp 2.2.2.

hence, i’m back to good o’l kubrick while i re-adapt my theme and watching out for more errors.

edit 2007.08.24: i think it was my theme that was messing things up. i had to remake a wp 2.2.x compatible theme to make things work. so far i haven’t been getting any errors.

“switch” is what i call this one. its still mostly kubrick but i’ve made some changes to the css and some files:

1. i switched the sidebar to the left
2. used a line instead of a grey background to visually separate the sidebar from the content
3. i increased the font size of the content
4. i switched fonts to the basic arial and georgia/times new roman
5. included the sidebar in the single.php file
6. and, its widgetized

i’ll probably save this iteration and then do more modifying.

but before i could get to that state of sidebar simplicity i had to edit two files from my theme — sidebar.php and functions.php to make it widget-friendly. the theme i’m using is based on the default kubrick theme and luckily it was one of those themes that can be easily changed to accomodate the widgets. automattic did include replacement files for those two files but i made a handful of changes to my sidebar.php already and replacing it wasn’t an option that i was considering. the instructions to editing the files and installing the plug-in are super simple and easy to follow.

first time i used the widgets the resulting sidebar had the default layout that i had when i first used the theme. this meant that my handful of changes to the search and meta sections wasn’t being used by the widget. which also means that the widget sort of replaces the sidebar code with its own.

aaawwww.

well, no biggie. there’s a how-to on using my original search box code as a widget so i just followed that and i got my search box. the next problem is the meta section. the edits i made in my meta was just to comment out the links to the entries and comments rss feed and the wordpress link. there wasn’t any documentation on changing the meta section so i did a little hacking using the how-to mentioned above as a guide and i got my widgetized meta section.

i got some more free time during the holy week so i’d probably check out what other stuff this widget thingy is capable of.
