if you’re on yahoo! web hosting and trying to upload your wordpress installation files via ftp it may interest you to know that, apparently, yahoo doesn’t like a lot of simultaneous ftp connections from a single ip address. i found that out when i was trying to upload a set of wordpress upgrade files to the server.

my solution was to limit connections to just one (1). it will take a longer time, yes but the files should be able to get to their destination properly.

one connection only

and if you’re behind a firewall, try using passive connections.

fox leaks memory

firefox on ubuntu leaks a lot of memory — maybe more than when i was running it in windows.

firefox at 130 meg

so my regimen now would be after visiting a few websites i close-open firefox. tedious i know. and opera is available in ubuntu. i have that installed also but i don’t use it enough for everyday work or surfing. maybe i should.

i would like to see internet explorer run natively in linux though. but i guess that’ll happen when hell freezes over (you know that concert? ;) ).

the good news is that firefox 3 is coming and in the beta 1 incarnation it appears to be fast. and according to mozilla, they have fixed over 300 memory leaks. dang! 300?!?! it also appears that ff3b1 consumes just as much memory as ff2 but leaks less.

pldt slow part 2

i got a report that a pldt contractor dropped by the site again to check the connection. he suggested that the reason the connection to the internet is slow is because there are too many people sharing the connection.

i’ve heard this load of crap before and apparently so did the client’s representative that was coordinating with the pldt guy. she said that if that is the case then how come the dsl connection wasn’t slow before? we had the same number of users before it slowed and after it slowed.

didn’t get an answer after that.

dude, no matter how many users are accessing/sharing the internet connection, it would just hit the max dsl speed and then sustain it until the demand for the connection diminishes. so far the max i’m getting from the stats is shown above — 16kbytes/sec. that is not near enough to the 45 kbytes/sec that i was getting before. and that was when we had more people accessing the internet.

move the link to a faster port or we move to another service provider.

banyantel and globe are already checking if they have lines in the area.

gmail at 5 gig

is it just me or has anyone noticed that gmail’s space counter jumped to 5 gig? compared to yahoo’s “unlimited” space, 5 gig is “small”. ;) but heck, 5 gig is still plenty.
